The Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) is building competitive capital markets in the Central Eastern Europe region. We are providing financing opportunities for companies looking to raise funds on the Romanian capital market. BVB has witnessed an increasing flow of capital in the recent past, coming from retail and institutional investors, both national and international. The Romanian capital market has embarked on an ambitious development journey and the future growth perspectives are optimistic.

Why the Bucharest Stock Exchange?

Clear growth story

The total market capitalization of the Bucharest Stock Exchange reached EUR 30.7 bn at the end of 2014, after registering steady increases for the last 2 years. Since January 2012 the domestic market capitalization increased by 70% mainly due to the listing of new companies on the Regulated Market. In addition, the main market index BET marked a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 18%. The traded value for the equities market doubled over the same period.

Successful privatization program

Since the beginning of the third quarter of 2013, three new companies have been privatized via the stock market. The Romanian Government has sold 10% of Nuclearelectrica, 15% of Romgaz and 51% of Electrica. Electrica’s public offering amounted to EUR 444 mn, the largest in BVB’s history. Romgaz, worth of EUR 383 mn, was the second largest public offering recorded on the Bucharest Stock Exchange. Currently, there are several other state-owned companies planning to become listed on BVB.

Growing domestic potential

Building a strong community of retail investors is currently one of BVB’s top priorities. BVB has already established a set of measures that would support the achievement of this goal, namely the recommendations presented in the document 10 Steps towards Civic Shareholding and started working on each of the steps. Successfully addressing the issues outlined in this document will also have a positive effect on the Romanian economy. It will moreover enforce BVB’s main function, of financing the economy.

Future upgrade to the Emerging markets status

BVB’s primary objective, widely supported by the market participants, the Romanian Financial Supervisory Authority (FSA) and the Romanian Government, is the upgrade of the Romanian capital market to the Emerging market status by international recognized bodies. BVB needs to fulfill a set of quantitative and qualitative criteria. Some of them have already been fulfilled by BVB. For the rest, BVB has enacted a number of measures that will help it reach this goal.

Financing opportunity

In order to accommodate any company at any stage of the development, the Bucharest Stock Exchange has established and is currently operating two dynamic markets – the Regulated Market (RM) and AeRO, the equities segment of BVB’s Alternative Trading System (ATS). Both markets are aimed to offer Romanian and international companies an opportunity to attract financing for their growth story.
